It's Fixed!

The washing machine is fixed! It took Hubby less than five minutes to put the new part in. The part cost us $9.50, plus the $12.50 for shipping. The $12.50 was well worth it because it means I do not have to go back the laundromat today.

I found my visit to the laundromat a little entertaining. The people that I saw did not sort their clothes. They put all their clothes together. I am talking reds and whites and other colors. There was a young guy there who ended up with pink underwear. He didn't seem to notice, but I did as it was going round and round in the dryer. One man put too much detergent in the machine and bubbles were all over. I wouldn't have noticed, but his daughter let everyone know.

Now, I just need to get the refrigerator fixed.

Waiting on Fed Ex

I am waiting for the Fed Ex man to deliver the part for the washing machine. Hubby figured out the part we needed on Monday while I was at the laundromat. When I came home he told me the part was $9.50 and then we had to decide how fast we wanted it to arrive. Normally, I am very frugal when it comes to paying for shipping. I will not pay for faster service and I will do my best to find a free coupon. I didn't have the time to do that this time around. I told Hubby that I spent $12 at the laundromat and if the part did not come by Thursday, I would have to go back again so that he had enough clean uniforms for work. We opted on the overnight delivery, which was $12.50. The part was shipped out yesterday and is on the truck making it's way to our house as I write this. Hubby has promised he will install it tonight. I really hope this fixes the problem. He says it will.

The refrigerator is still turned off. I had hoped that Hubby would pick up that part yesterday, but he didn't. I will have to make or buy ice soon. I guess I better dig out the ice cube trays as we are starting to get low on the ice that I saved from the broken refrigerator. Ice makers really can spoil a person. Hubby keeps going to the broken refrigerator trying to get ice. I just laugh at him.

Appliances Are Out To Get Me

Sorry I haven't been around recently. We are busy getting ready for our next camping trip which begins tomorrow. This trip will involve the entire family which includes MIL, FIL, BILS, SILS, nieces and nephews. There will be 16 of us total plus Jack & Scout. It is the first family trip of the year. We used to go with the entire family all the time, but the kids are getting older and have other interests. This looks to be the only trip with the entire family this year.

Yesterday, our refrigerator decided to quit working again. It really upsets me because we do not have the money to buy a new one. We have an old one that is in our laundry room and that is what we are using. We will probably limp by with that one for as long as we can. Hubby will try to fix it, but he doesn't know if it is fixable at this point. I did get it running for a while yesterday, but then it started beeping and a warning signal flashed on the display. The best way I can describe it is that it looked like a bomb with an "!" next to it. I decided to turn it off at that point.

The appliance death continued in our house this morning. The washing machine will not agitate. It will spin, but not agitate. If hubby cannot get it working, I guess I will become a regular at the laundromat for a while. I really don't have the time to do that, but I guess I will have to make the time. It will be a few weeks before we can buy a new washing machine because we leave for our Kansas vacation next week. I'm really thinking we should cancel the vacation. Hubby does not feel the same way, but honestly, I am sick and tired of worrying about money and the latest appliance problems have me feeling extremely down.

On the bright side, last week I saved $30 by using coupons. This week, I saved $26. I hope to keep improving.

Happy Memorial Weekend to everyone!

Loosing Weight?

This morning I was quite excited when I got dressed. It seemed that I was loosing weight. The excitement ended quickly when I learned that the elastic in my underwear was just wearing out. :::sigh:::

Spare Parts Are Not A Good Thing

I have a TV in my office. I keep it on all day long, but it's on mute most of the time because my job involves a lot of phone work. Today, I turned on the TV and the picture would not come on. The TV is quite old. My husband's step father gave it to us several years ago because he was throwing it out. It's a strange TV because it doesn't have a remote and it has always been a problem even with universal remotes. It's hard to find channel 3 on it and that's what it needs for the satellite to work. I obviously leave it on that channel, but there have times that it has come off of the channel. I played with it a little bit, but it seemed to be making a popping noise and that scared me. I decided that the picture tube had gone out.

I headed downstairs to search for the first TV that hubby and I purchased when we got married almost 23 years ago. Yes, it still works, but it has a dial to change the channel and it doesn't have a mute. It's a pain. I couldn't find it, but found another old TV. I carried it up the steps. Old TVs are heavy. I hooked it up and it wouldn't work either. I then remembered that the picture tube had gone out in that one. I cussed hubby because he never gets rid of anything. I went back downstairs and found the TV I had originally searched for and carried it up the steps. I hooked it up to our Leap Frog which is a device that allows you to get satellite in another room without a receiver. It wouldn't work either and it seemed to be popping too. It was at this point that I decided it was the Leap Frog and not the TV causing me the problem. I then decided to hook the old TV up to rabbit ears. Our rabbit ears flop every which way and will not stand up. I have been meaning to get a new antenna so that I can watch TV in my "exercise room", but I haven't done it. I decided a trip to Walmart would be needed sooner than later.

I ended up not having a TV today. I was bumming big time. It was so lonely in my office. At the end of the day, I decided to look at the Leap Frog. I am not mechanical at all, but figured I would give it a try. I knew that hubby would not be thrilled having to look at TVs and the Leap Frog tonight. I am also someone who tries to be self sufficient. I really do not like having to rely on anyone. I unplugged it and plugged it in. Okay, that didn't do anything. I then noticed that it has the same wires that plug into the satellite receiver. It has red, yellow and black. Hmmmm... that's a coincidence. LOL I then remembered that yesterday when I hooked up the receiver after taking it out of the motor home that I didn't see the yellow plug. I didn't worry about it because everything seemed to work, that is, everything worked until today. Light bulb moment! I found the yellow plug and plugged it into the receiver. I plugged in the old TV again and then .... there was a picture on the TV. Woo Hoo! My office still looks like a grave yard for old TVs as there are two on the floor, but I am happy. I will move the TVs back to the basement tomorrow. I don't want to put any more strain on my back today. The lesson of the day is to always figure out where those spare parts are supposed to go.

Hummingbirds and Orioles

There are currently three hummingbirds coming to the feeder outside my office window. The number will increase over the next few months. August is the month where I see the most activity. I will have more hummingbirds than I can accurately count by then. I planned on posting a photo from last year, but I must have deleted all of the hummingbird photos.

This year, I have had a male and female Orchard Oriole feeding at the hummingbird feeder. They seem to be fine with drinking from the regular hummingbird feeder, so no need to spend money on a feeder just for them. However, a Baltimore Oriole came by yesterday and he didn't seem to understand how to feed from it. I decided to put some jelly out for him. I am waiting rather impatiently for the orioles to return this morning so that I can see them feed on the jelly. I definitely can hear their song, so I know they are still around.

The raccoons are a problem with my hummingbird feeder. They like to empty it out each night, so I bring it in the house most nights. We will be away camping this weekend, so that creates a problem. I put another feeder in our fenced backyard. I'm hoping the hummingbirds find it and the raccoons do not. Last year, I put a feeder in the backyard while we were gone and it didn't look like anyone found it. I tied some red ribbon on the fence in hopes that I attract the hummingbirds to it this time. There is really not much more I can do.

Genealogy

My husband's grandmother was very big into researching her family history. She went from library to library and cemetery to cemetery doing her research. She used to send off for birth and death certificates and wait weeks for their arrival. I became interested in researching my own family history before Grandma died in 2000. She showed me all of her research and after she died, I inherited it. I'm the only one in the family who had any type of interest in it. I put it all on the computer. I wish Grandma could have seen all her hard work printed out and made into various reports. She would have been proud and amazed.

I have always been interested in reading obituaries. I'm not sure why. I find them interesting. I like looking at tombstones and reading the inscriptions. I guess some may think it is morbid. I just find it very interesting. I guess that is why I enjoy genealogy so much. It is like putting a puzzle together.

I was really into gathering my family history about four years ago. One of the best days I had was visiting a cemetery about one and half hours from my house. I spent a few hours finding the grave of my relatives. I am talking relatives that died in the 1800's. Through the Internet, I have met distant relatives who have sent me photos of our relatives from the 1800's. My prize photo is of Agatha & Barth Krietler. They are my great, great grandparents. They were married in 1850. I sat in the cemetery and just imagined what their lives must have been like. I visited the church that they attended. I also visited my great grandmother's grave that day. I was surrounded by relatives that passed on so many years before.

Life takes over and I became busy with other things and my genealogy was put aside. I started thinking about it the other day with all the talk of the Swine Flu. I thought about my Dad's sister. He never knew her because she died before he was born. I thought she died of the Spanish Flu of 1918, but after I pulled out her death certificate and I realized I was wrong. She died in 1920. She and my Dad died on the same day, but 67 years apart. See, it's that kind of stuff that I love.

Genealogy is so much easier now than even just a few years ago. Missouri has some death records online, free of charge to look up. The past two evenings I have been looking up records. My husband doesn't get it, but I love it. I was thrilled when I was able to copy my Family Tree Maker to my laptop tonight. I can work in the living room now and do all my research while still being in the same room with my husband.

Does anyone else enjoy genealogy?
